"Pippi Longstocking has sometimes been called an icon of feminist girl-power. If 'Becoming Astrid' makes anything clear, it's that the character's creator was something of one herself." - Washington Post
In this new biopic, teenaged Astrid Lindren, who later went on to write the Pippi Longstocking series, leads a carefree life with her family in the forests and fields of rural Sweden. Restless and eager to break free from the confines of her conservative upbringing, she accepts an internship at a local newspaper where she attracts the attention of its married editor, Blomberg. After Astrid becomes pregnant, she goes to Copenhagen to secretly give birth to a son, Lasse, whom she reluctantly leaves in the care of a foster mother. Later Astrid must use her imagination and flair for storytelling to reconnect with her son. In spite of her struggles, Astrid emerges with a newfound courage that will later form the foundation of a vast and beloved body of work. Not Rated (contains sexual situations and nudity), 123 minutes.
"Using the fan letters of children as touchstones, the film tells a story which contains many of the same stirring qualities - resilience, triumph over adversity - which made Lindgren's fiction so enduringly popular." - Screen International
"This film about an exemplary woman, made by women, is as much a pleasure as it is a lesson." - rogerebert.com
"The performances - including the superb Trine Dyrholm as the baby's Danish foster mother - are pitch-perfect." - New York Times
"Though unflinching in its depictions of Astrid's pain, it does not wallow. A shallower story would be rife with villains, but there are none here." - Arizona Republic
"Astrid's feminist sensibilities provide a compelling perspective on gender politics, while her resilience adds a layer of poignancy." - Cinemalogue
