Diving Deep: The Life and Times of Mike deGruy (2020)

By The Miniplex (other events)

11 Dates Through Jan 31, 2020

ABOUT ABOUT

The story of Santa Barbara fimmaker and environmental activist Mike deGruy: acclaimed underwater cinematographer, frequent collaborator of James Cameron, and sometimes Shark Week host, who died suddenly in 2012. DeGruy filmed the oceans for more than three decades, becoming as famous for his on-camera storytelling as for his glorious, intimate visions of the sea and the creatures who live in it. When Mike's wife and filmmaking partner Mimi deGruy was finally able to watch footage again after his death, she found a piece she'd never seen before and knew she had to make this film. Shot not long after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, it depicted a different Mike who had gone from an artist sharing the wonder of the deep to an enraged and impassioned warrior. While this new documentary celebrates Mike and all he accomplished, it also highlights what he cared most about at the time of his death: we are destroying the ocean before we even know what's there. Along with breathtaking underwater footage and Mike's consummate storytelling, it features interviews with those Mike worked with like Sir David Attenborough, James Cameron, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Alastair Fothergill, Paul and Grace Atkins and more.

"If you don’t know who he is, you owe it to yourself to find out... Thanks to his keen eye, deep experience, and fearlessness, he’s been able to capture some truly legendary shots in extreme conditions, such as lava going into the ocean off Hawaii, under-ice photography, giant squids, and orcas making runs at the beach to gobble up seals. Some of these moments had never been captured before, and are so profound they’ve been used not just for entertainment, but for basic research." -Film Threat

"A beautifully filmed documentary with some amazing underwater footage (much of it shot by deGruy himself), it also succeeds as a touching personal reminiscence and as an understated but effective environmental manifesto." -Hollywood Reporter
