Body Double is the latest project from Oakland-based singer-songwriter Candace Lazarou. Though akin to the heaving, gnashing no-wave of her former band, Mansion, Body Double places her imposing vocals in more melodic sonic furnishings. An ambitious home recording project incubated for three years until met with the right personnel, Body Double is Lazarou's venture into zipped-up post-punk, dour new wave and expansive psych dirges. Her exacting lyricism in greater focus, the result is more lucid but no less serrated.
The project harkens to its influences, shot through with references to Brian Eno's maniacal sonic strategies, guitar tones in the vein of Wire's 154 era, and a feminine touch that could be likened to PJ Harvey at her most vengeful. At the same time, Body Double's sound remains all their own -- Lazarou has cast a dark and enticing gyre inviting contributions from the rest of the ensemble: songwriter/bassist Noah Adams, guitarist Jascha Ephraim, drummer Chase Kamp (formerly of Bay Area dream-punk group Silver Shadows) and pianist/vocalist Ida Belisle.
