Oscar buzz is already building for lead actress Rebecca Hall, who portrays real-life 1970s news anchor Christine Chibbuck in this critically acclaimed drama. "Hall creates a fierce, uncompromising portrait of a woman who was prescient enough to see the dark places her culture was headed - the logical end game of our "if it bleeds, it leads" obsessions - but also damaged enough to succumb to them." - Globe & Mail
"As much as it signals the dawn of a more exploitative brand of journalism, the film also sees Christine as the victim of a sexist newsroom culture that punished women of substance." -NPR
"Rebecca Hall, who's always been a bright spot, is an eclipse, crossing arduous emotional terrain with ease and finding moments of dignity and grace in mental illness." - Cinemixtape
"Turns a probing and revelatory lens on the soul-destroying task of chasing eyeballs with sensationalistic news, long before clickbait became a journalistic mission." -Toronto Star
Based on a true story. Christine (Rebecca Hall), always the smartest person in the room at her local Sarasota, Florida news station, feels like she is destined for bigger things and is relentless in her pursuit of an on-air position in a larger market. As an aspiring newswoman with an eye for nuance and an interest in social justice, she finds herself constantly butting heads with her boss, who pushes for juicier stories that will drive up ratings. Plagued by self-doubt and a tumultuous home life, Christine’s diminishing hope begins to rise when an on-air co-worker (Michael C. Hall) initiates a friendship which ultimately becomes yet another unrequited love. Disillusioned as her world continues to close in on her, Christine takes a dark and surprising turn... Rated R, 115 mins.
