FREE screening with $5 minimum food or drink purchase from the bar, for our "Week of the Living Dead" celebration of the 50th Anniversary of 'Night of the Living Dead!' The final film in the late George A. Romero's social commentary horror trilogy is set in an underground military bunker during humanity's last stand, where a scientific research team conducts experiments on captured zombies, while the undead outnumber the living 400,000 to 1. Not received as well by fans as the first two fillms upon its release, it has has since enjoyed a major reappraisal by critics and fans who have come to view the film as the director's most savage sociopolitical polemic, "tinged with the sadness of knowing the brutality of human nature under duress." Who are the protagonists and who are the antagonists in this Reagan Era film? We will be screening the new high-definition remaster of the film.
"Day of the Dead‘s resistance to being pigeonholed into its decade frees it from merely being the ‘80s zombie movie... One is struck with the almost angry deconstruction of the Zombie legend Romero unleashes with this savage finale to the trilogy." - Slant
"Tense rather than terrifying, and with a strong black comic undercurrent, it rests on the mordant observation that zombies or no zombies, chances are the living will tear each other apart. A fitting conclusion to a remarkably astute series, a landmark in the horror genre." - Time Out London
"Fans of the first two films in the series may be a bit dismayed by DAY OF THE DEAD's de-emphasis of gory action in favor of characterization, but the need to exploit the horror of the situation has passed and the film works by concentrating instead on its implications and possible solution." - TV Guide
"One of the most uneasy and unnerving horror movies ever created." - Cinema Crazed
"An intelligent, well-written, excellently played movie, with top flight gore/horror effects, perverse humour and a provocatively bleak vision" - Empire
