ABOUT ABOUT

Guatemala’s first-ever entry for the foreign language Oscar, IXCANUL is "a film that gives an urgent, original voice to a people too frequently marginalized in both movies and society at large." - Variety

"An absorbing, beautifully-shot drama of cultural ritual and the drive of one young woman to escape a rudimentary social system." - The Film Stage

"More than a fable about the clash of tradition and modernity, Ixcanul is finally a painful illustration of the ease with which those who have can prey on those who don’t." - NY Times

"Quivers with a fierce if understated feminine energy." - Los Angeles Times

Maria, a 17 year old Mayan woman, lives on the slopes of an active volcano in Guatemala. An arranged marriage awaits her. Although Maria dreams of seeing the city, her status as an indigenous woman does not allow her to go out into that modern world. Later, during a pregnancy complication, this modern world may save her life, but at what price? Not Rated. 93 min.
