The final film from Russian auteur Andrei Tarkovsky (SOLARIS, STALKER, ANDREI RUBLEV) is getting a 4K restoration and we're proud to be bringing this gorgeous, otherworldly film to the big screen in Humboldt! Made in 1986 while Tarkovsky was in exile in Sweden and suffering from brain cancer, the film's apocalyptic vision of World War Three has a timeliness in this current era of uncertainty. "A densely coiled koan about the possibility of retaining one’s sanity in a world gone mad." - Forward
"No other filmmaker so powerfully evokes a world of the spirit existing beyond surface appearances, and in doing so, Tarkovsky creates some of the most piercingly beautiful images ever captured on film." - L.A. Times
"Brilliant and audacious, with one of the most extraordinary final sequences in modern cinema." - The Guardian (U.K.)
"A stunningly beautiful film that holds your attention even while you feel slightly stunned, in a less welcome way, by what is actually going on." - New York Times
"Compared with The Sacrifice's art, the formal sophistication of even the best Hollywood movies seems superficially applied." - TIME
SYNOPSIS: The Sacrifice begins in Bergmanesque fashion on a small, remote island, where friends and family gather for drama critic Alexander's birthday celebration. The revelry is interrupted by a radio announcement: World War III has begun, and mankind is only hours away from utter annihilation. Each of the guests reacts differently to the news: the most dramatic response is Alexander's, who promises God that he'll give up everything he holds dear--including his beloved 6-year-old son -- if war is averted. Allan Edwall, a local mailman with purported mystical powers, offers to intervene with the Creator on Josephson's behalf... The Sacrifice won four awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including the Grand Prix. Rated PG. 145 mins.
